A sink stopper mechanism isn t difficult to understand.
If a sink won t hold water look up behind the sink with a flashlight if needed to identify the following parts.
This is a repair you can do yourself.

The ball rod holds the stopper in the drain.
Remove stopper from drain.

If your sink pop up won t pop up or seat properly fixing it is quite easy usually just a matter of adjusting a few parts.
The culprit is often a buildup of hair around the base of the stopper or the pivot rod mechanism.

Remove clip from ball rod.
The ball rod is inserted into the side of the drain and attached with a nut.
When you push or pull on the lift rod it activates a lever the extends through the drain tailpiece.
6 shows the gasket seated correctly between the clicker assembly and the stopper.
But sink stoppers fail.
Most sink stopper tailpipes are made of pvc and will be connected to the drain with a pvc compression nut that you can loosen by hand.
To reach the stopper the ball rod needs to be removed first.
A pivot rod that connects to the back of the drain pipe a perforated strap a clevis and a screw that locks the strap onto the stopper rod.
Now that the bottom of the tailpipe if free from the p trap loosen the nut that connects it to the threaded bottom of the sink drain.

Simply remove the plunger clean and if necessary replace.
Unthread the sink stopper s tailpipe from the underside of the drain.
If water still does not hold in the sink the next check will be the actual stopper seal.

Re tighten the thumb screw by turning clockwise.
